Charles asks…

Who was the first Hollywood diva (man or woman) to demand nobody look them in the eyes?

I have read in various sources in recent years that some of the biggest stars in Hollywood and the music industry insist no one look them directly in the eyes when they do public appearances. This is just one of many egotistical behaviors common in the entertainment industry. Does anyone know if this is a recent phenomenon or an old one? Any ideas about which jerk movie star or musician was the first to make this demand? I know Jennifer Lopez is notorious for this.

Grace answers:

Dang it, u took my answer lol i was gonna say Jennifer Lopez.
And no, sorry i don’t know who was the first to do this but it probably started a long time ago… Like when there were silent films and black & white movies out. But i don’t think u could ever figure out who was first.

But J. Lo probably does it the most… She is such a beyotch. “Jenny From the Block” my @$$ lol.

Edit: Tom Cruise does it too… I remember my teacher telling me a story about when he met Tom. Long story short, my teacher asked for his autograph and Tom said, “you’ve got to be kidding me!” and laughed in his face. He’s a huge jerk too.

Carol asks…

Do you ever use pomade and if so, what brand or brands do you prefer?

Do you associate this product with one or the other gender, with a particular ethnic group, with a particular generation or time period, or with a particular subculture of socioeconomic class? I.e. do you think of it as a product for white guys who are into hot rods and rockabilly who wear pomps, inner city African American girls who straighten their hair, old time Hollywood movie stars with shiny slickbacks, fashionistas with piece-y fringes, or some other image?

Wondering mainly if this is perceived as more a male or female thing though I’ve also known it to have racial and other connotations.

Grace answers:

“Pomade” makes me think of “O Brother Where Art Thou” when George Clooney’s character was trying to find some Dapper Dan pomade, lol. It also makes me think of fashion models with “piece-y fringes” as you put it.

I have never used pomade. I have thin fine hair that would just look limp and lanky with it. But I do use a lovely shine treatment spray from Avon.

George asks…

apply liquid eye liner in a good way??

hey I like the way the old movie stars apply eye liner in a old hollywood way .How can I copy it?

Grace answers:

I am a make up artist and here are some tips.

What you need:

eye liner brush
eyeliner
mascara

It takes alot of practice to get that perfect line or just to use the eyeliner itself. I like to put liquid eye liner on with a brush its easier. Then after you apply the eye liner(should only be at the top to get the good look) make sure its completely dry. The apply mascara.

If you doing the whole look start with eyeshadow

Shape and define your eyes with eyeliner after you’ve applied eye shadow and before applying mascara. Whether you choose a soft line or a dramatic stroke, eyeliner draws attention.

First, close one eye and gently tug and hold the outer edge of the eye taut with your left hand. With your right hand (lefties, vice-versa), using short strokes, line from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner, using a slight upward sweep at the outer corner. The upward point gives the illusion of gradually longer lashes (after curling and mascara, of course).

To steady a shaky hand when you want to apply a liquid liner, standing close to a mirror helps. Stand close to the mirror and allow the back of your hand to gently touch the mirror. This steadies the hand while you are applying the liner!

Hope that helps.
